Nutshell
Q: Besides the paradigms that you get when you install Nutshell,
there are several other types in the dialog with which you can create
a new workspace. These all start with Par and don't seem to work.
A: You probably didn't remove an older version of Nutshell
(1.0.214 and ealier), in which the names of the paradigms all start
with Par.
This way, they were not overwritten by the new versions.
You can remove these old version by browsing to the paradigm folder
on your harddisk (typically "c:\Program Files\Nutshell\Paradigm") and
remove them manually.
Q: I've got some scripts that I used in Nutshell 1.0.214, but now
they don't seem to work anymore.
A: That's probably because there have been some adjustments to
the Nutshell Visual Basic scripting. Some new features were added,
some old notation has been changed and some have been removed because
of some better alternatives.
Read this notice.
It also applies to Nutshell versions 1.0.253 and 1.0.255.
Q: Nutshell does not run under Windows 95.
I get a 'shlwapi.dll not found' error and the HTML help does not work either.
A: Nutshell does run on Windows 95, but sometimes you may have
problems with system dll's (dynamic link libraries) and/or HTMLHelp files,
especially if you run the first release of Windows 95 and/or have an old
version of Internet Explorer.
To avoid all these problems, download the latest Internet Explorer from
Microsoft, available at the Microsoft web site at this url:
http://www.microsoft.com/ie/
On 2000-12-12, it was at version 5.5 (Service Pack 1) and Nutshell works
ok on Windows 95 when this version of Internet Explorer is installed.
You may need to install the so-called 'Plus!' package first in order to
get connected to the Internet and be able to upgrade Internet Explorer.
Q: Nutshell does not run under Windows NT.
I get a 'Nutshell.exe - Entry Point Not Found (procedure entry point
__lc_collate_cp)' error.
A: First of all, make sure you have installed Windows NT Service
Pack 6a or higher, available at the Microsoft web site at this url:
Service
Pack 6a or higher
Secondly, to ensure you have recent system dll's and the HTMLHelp controls,
download the latest Internet Explorer from Microsoft, available at the
Microsoft web site at this url:
http://www.microsoft.com/ie/
On 2000-12-12, it was at version 5.5 (Service Pack 1) and Nutshell works
ok on Windows NT when this version of Internet Explorer is installed.
When you use a Windows NT installation with the stock version of Internet
Explorer (version 2.0) you will get a 'shlwapi.dll not found' error, when
starting Nutshell (see also FAQ "Nutshell does not run under Windows 95").
Note that even the latest Windows NT Service Pack (6a) does not resolve
these dll and HTMLHelp issues.
Third, you must install Nutshell as Administrator , because
Nutshell needs to install three system dll's in the system directory
\WINNT\system32 (MFC42.dll, MSVCP60.dll and MSVCRT.dll) and needs Administrator
rights to do so.
After this, you can use Nutshell as either Administrator or any so called
Ordinary User.
Q: Nutshell does not run under Windows 2000.
It fails to install: just stops after unpacking the self extracting
install program. Or, if it does install, I get a 'Failed to update the
system registry. Please try using REGEDIT.' warning from Nutshell v. 1.0.25x
and then some of the windows are just blank when I reload a previously saved
workspace.
A: You must install Nutshell as either Administrator or a so
called Power User (= Standard User, which is the default when you
create a user under Windows 2000).
To be on the safe side: always install as Administrator (just like
Windows NT).
This is necessary because Nutshell needs to install three system dll's in the
system directory \WINNT\system32 (MFC42.dll, MSVCP60.dll and MSVCRT.dll) and
needs Administrator rights to do so.
After this, you can use Nutshell as either Administrator or any so called
Standard User (= a Power User, which is the default when you create a user
under Windows 2000). Please note that Nutshell does not run well as a
so called Restricted User (= User). Nutshell will give the warning
mentioned above. This will be fixed in a future version (wherein Nutshell
will probably fail to start when started by a Restricted User).
There are no known dll or HTMLHelp issues under Windows 2000, because the
bundled stock version of Internet Explorer (5.00) is quite recent.
